You've heard it before, groups disbanding because the other group members took a back seat to the lead singer. Not that the lead singer wasn't talented, they just felt that certain songs, other group members could sing.

What do you think? Should one solid lead singer be banned from vocal groups, especially if other group members can sing just as good or better that the singer fronting the group? If not, how should the lead singer be picked and who sould do the choosing?

Should stage pressence or vocal performance be a factor in choosing a lead singer? Add playing instruments, too.

My take is this: Every band needs a leader, even if it is just a front on stage. I've seen bands where the leader or lead singer does nothing, shows no personality, and it's just awful.

How the leader is chosen depends on who is most popular with the audience, usually the most personable member.

Groups break up over egos all the time. Not just the lead singer's. Lead guitarists are just as bad about the ego thing. The group's primary composer, drummers and so on. Sometime's its really the spouse pumping poison in the ear of the guy/gal who's ego gets out of check. Sometimes a band member gets full of themselves and does the band in.

Talent and egos often go together. Not much you can do about it, but anybody but the band choosing the lead is dead wrong. If the lead singer is not all that special they can easily be replaced. Genisis went through 4 of them. Phil Collins was just the last lead singer for Genisis, another ex Genisis lead singer was Peter Gabriel. The other two had limited success in post Genisis projects. If it's a real music group not a bunch of lip synching fakes put together by a record company to gather in the bubble gum market they deserve the artistic freedom to choose thier own lead. If they are not really who sang the songs who cares who gets the most camera time?

Hey the Beatles,(one of the greatest rock bands in history) had two (John and Paul) and two back up leads (George and Ringo) and they broke up after 10 years of success. By the way don't tell me Yoko Ono broke them up. Paul has said he was just tired of all the fighting they did during every recording session that is why he left.
Any way I am getting off topic. Usually what happens is the success goes to the lead singers head and he or she thinks they don't need the others. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. It's is like the TV star who gets one hit movie and thinks he or she is a great movie actor now. They leave the show and fall flat on their face.
What a lot of groups are doing now is each member has their solo career as well as their gig with their main band. Examples of this are Genesis,The Who(whats left of them) Rolling Stones etc. They find it works well for them. I think that is the smart way to go.

only if the other members aren't as talented

in many cases though the lead singer is the person that is the most 'visually stimilating' and not always the best singer.

from experience one lead singer never works, because the other members grow jealous, and feel unvalued.
