How come church schools and universities exist today?

They are privately funded or paid by tuition. No Federal government grants or funding, such as public schools receive.
Freedom of choice by all who attend.

I think you are asking about the separation of church and state that this country was founded upon. That basically translates to there being no "official" state religion vs. the Church of England as an example. It doesn't mean that churches can't exist, or church schools can't exist, but that the government doesn't officially back one religion vs. another.

Those schools are private, not funded by the government. That's why they're so expensive. Separation of church and state is an idea meant for publicly funded schools.

usually people talk of the separation between church and STATE...not school. The govt shall establish no particular religion. Also, the govt doesn't tax churches.
