For instance the kidnappings and rapes of girls as young as 2 yrs old in the Congo. What is going on over there and why is nothing being done about it and other horrible events in other countries? How do celebs have more importance than world events?

Often times, a person can do little to change these things.
Dwelling on them would be a depressing futile exercise.

I don't think they are so much ignored as localized. There is so very much happening world wide that is utterly heartbreaking, were the media to focus on all of it, the details and any potential action that individuals might take would be lost to most of us being rendered numb by the overload of terrible information.

Rather than fritter away my limited ability on the ripping emotional awareness of all that is bad, I have concentrated my personal efforts to my immediate surroundings. That is all I can reasonably hope to affect in a positive way. I cheer on others, who with more energy and resources, attempt to have a broader impact.

An old prayer (paraphrased) has become my guiding light in the last 30 years of world developments... "God grant me the patience to endure those things I cannot change, the courage and strength to change the things I can and the wisdom to know the difference."

For those who lack the strength to cope with their fear of what they see around them, celebrities and other mind candy is perhaps the sedative they need to continue finding enough joy to arise each morning. I hesitate to judge anyone, for how can I know what tragedy they have seen in their own lives and how this may have affected their ability to face the tragedies of others.

Do what you can. Help one person in some way and maybe that person will help two others... Small acts count and if you can do more, then have the commitment to give it a try... But DO it, don't waste your time talking about it. People respond to action, but eventually drift away from only a talker.

Because people spend more time complaining about the tragedies than doing anything about them. If it concerns you then join an international charity group. Join amnesty international. World leaders can't solve every problem. They don't have the resources to. So they will only solve the problems that are important to the people who will vote them in. If people don't know about a problem or consider their daily problems more important that nothing will ever get done. That's why I'm a part of ONE and Amnesty International.

You are not going to like my answer. It's just too depressing. I am completely aware of what is going on in the Congo. I think that over 1M people have been killed down there. Between that and our soldiers being needlessly killed in Iraq and Afghanistan and other places and starvation in all countries and terrorism, etc. etc etc.....It's just too much. I was lucky enough to be born in a loving home, in a good community, in a good country....I am happy. I just get depressed because I know that I cannot make difference.

cause what is a person going to do, r they gonna hold huge rallies for somthing to get done. we really cant do anything about it. its not like im goin to go out somwhere across the world to go help someone when i have my own problems that need fixen. n u cant fix everyone elses problems that would just make the world a gay place to live in. i dont agree with the raping n murdering of ppl, but it sorta has to be done cause the world is over populated. so i dont feel that bad. plus im ot goin to sit there n feel bad that i could of done something cause i know that i mostly likely couldnt of. n celebs, i know nothing about them, i dont pay attention to them at all

Some people live in a bubble and they feel safe that way. The people who ignore those stories are probably the ones who change the channel when the commercial for starving children comes out. People think if they don't hear bad news they will be happier.

If we concentrated on the negative all the time, we would all be depressed. You must seek the good in life, too for a healthy, balanced perspective.

We aren't responsible for all the worlds tragedies and it would be impossible to provide justice for the whole entire world. but you're right..... celebrities are way overrated.
