yeah, i would say weigh the towel, use it and weigh it again. in chem class we did that with our names. well...we weighed a piece of paper, then wrote our names on it with pencil and weighed it again. the teacher had this crazy scale that was sensitive enough. then we found the atomic mass of our name using the formula for graphite.

take a black peice of cloth... wipe a paper towel on it (make sure it is well brushed first)
Then take an area of it and measure how many peices of lint you can see (with a magnifing glass) ... do that to 4 or so areas (about the size of 1cm^2 should work)
Average those numbers together, and you get the ammount of lint left per square centimeter.
(then it is always a good idea to do it again and see if you get the same results)

go over the surface you just wiped with the paper towel, with clear plastic packaging tape, you will see any lint, on the tape.
make sure you go over the surface with a piece of tape before you use the first paper towel, so you know you are lint free on the first swipe.
