It's just political. The Dixie Chicks made comments about the President on a tour to Europe (they were ashamed he's from Texas, their home state) and Toby Keith is very openly conservative and kind of a chauvanist. He's fond of mouthing off to get a rise out of people, and they aren't afraid to fight back. So, it was inevitable no matter when it started or who started it.
