Did you know Wal-Mart will no longer have layaway as an option? What do you think about this? And would you yell at me because of it?

They really are, I work for Wal-Mart...last day to put on x-mas layaways is November 9th and the latest they can be picked up is December 8th. A lot of people do use layaway but it actually costs Wal-Mart more money in the long run....most of the people who use it never come back for their items or cancel it, so we loose all that money. by the time they do cancel it they have extended it for a long period of time and the items go on clearance

I can't wait to hear what the "ladies" have to say about this...I should get an ear full.

A lot of people put stuff in layaway and never make a payment on it or pick it up on time. I think Wall Marts employees get paid so little for all the work they do. So It's not fair for them to have to go thru all the stuff people put in layaway and never pick up. That's alot of work they have to do. Plus can you imagine all the storage they have to use to store all the layaway stuff. My opinion is if you don't have the money to purchase it right their and then. Why do you even waist gas to go to the store and get yourself another bill.. And no I'm not gonna yell at you, it's not your fault they are gonna do this.

Perhaps you haven't worked for WalMart long enough to know that this is pretty much a standard procedure every year at this time in the season, and the reason is simple: January inventory.

If WalMart, KMart or any other company were to have a tremendous amount of stock held in back for layaway, they wouldn't be able to count it as inventory yet, as you pointed out, they can't count it as a sale yet, either.

The reason they hold Christmas as the deadine is to encourage people to pay for all items in a timely manner so that the employees then have time to return anything not picked up to the showroom floor or stock room before year-end inventory which must be done in January for tax purposes. After inventory is finished, the layaway department will again be up and running.

Oh, and why the crack about "ladies"? Don't you realize how many men utilize layaway as well?

Okay - I just checked out walmart.com and yes, they are permanently closing their layaway due to declining use and increasing costs. Looks like people HAVE taken to using their credit cards more and are not willing to "pay first, play later". We are living in a nation raised on instant gratification, after all.

I will leave my original answer intact and stand corrected, but no, I wouldn't think any sane person would yell at you because corporate has decided to discontinue the layaway department: after all, you weren't in on the decision, were you?

And that's how you can respond to anyone giving you a hard time: "I'm sorry I wasn't consulted in this decision, but if you'd like to give me your name, I can pass it along to the higher ups with your sentiments the next time they DO ask my opinion!" =)

I did hear that in the news. I have worked in the retail business before (as a store manager at Wet Seal) and I can tell you that anytime you have a policy change you are going to have many people upset. And there will will nothing you can do to make that person happy. These people are the ones that don't understand that life and companies have to make changes to better themselves for the future. If Wal-Mart didn't make this change then they would have to make up for the lost money (un-bought lay-a-ways) in another way, i.e. raised priced. This is something we all have to look at. Do we want higher prices on the items that we need and use everyday so that someone can put their Christmas items on lay-a-way? Or would you just want to tell that person to do us all a favor and open a saving account?

No, I did not know Wal Mart will no longer have a layaway dept.
I never gave it a thought before. It doesn't matter to me if they do or not. Why would anyone yell at you because of it?

I have never used it. But even if I did I would not yell at the employee- it is not their fault corporate decided to do away with layaway. (and no- that was not an intentional rhyme)

No, don't tell me this. I was about to put a Xbox 360 on layaway.

I never used there layaway option. And i'm glad. The prices they have their are dirt cheap and I think that they should wait to buy it. Its not any stores responsibility to hold it for them. That's why they have online stores to buy it from them. I"m glad they are not doing this any more.

Yes I heard this on the news. This is another way of hurting the poor who need to make smaller payments to buy things such as christmas gifts. Sad that Walmart has moved so far from the ideals of Sam Walton. He is probably spinning in his grave.

Lay-a-way was for people back when there were no credit cards.

My thinking is people should save their money if they know they'll need it for Christmas, birthday, etc. purchase. That, or put it on a credit card and pay it off ASAP.
