the Descent? That was pretty original and it was a pretty good movie (it was foriegn)

The Exorcist (1973) this movie was so good that priests, psychiatrists and EMTs were on hand all over thje country people actually had to be taken to the hospital and the Catholic church saw an increase in membership within days of it's release. Besides like Psycho it didn't rely on effects save for make-up and voice overs.

Although I didn't particularly like it, The Blair Witch Project seemed to get a lot of press. I'd have to go farther back to find something original... how about The Shining with Jack Nicholson?

Don't know about now. The 70s and 80s had the best horror films though.
