You can help troubled kids voluntarily if you want but if you want to make it a profession you would have to go back to school and do a teaching certificate for that.
I did the same thing. I went to school for Information systems and now I want to be a teacher. There are specific teaching certificates. You should do some research based on the state you live in.

Longlash....take a look at my profile. We're kindred spirits as I'm in my final semester of Human Resources and want to work women and barriers to employment. I may be doing this as volunteer work one night a week after I graduate until something comes around.

I'm looking towards non-profit organizations to help women get out of poverty. Perhaps you and I need to talk!

If interested go to my profile and click on the contact details.

Have you considered something in line of working with kids on job training assistance? Perhaps checking with Boys and Girls clubs or Junior Achievement for ideas.

We need people with HR backgrounds who can help these people get to a better life. Don't give up your dream!!
