We have at work an internal server (with a private IP address, I guess) to which we connect (2 macs) via ethernet. I just hit "Command-K", enter the IP address, and bam! i'm connected. Within the next month, I'll move to another city and I will need to get access to the internal server. Is there anything I can do? We are planning on buying the Apple remote desktop to see if we can connect to the server thru it. Thanks :)

I know absolutely nothing about Macs, however the Internet is a common denominator here.

VPN sounds like a viable option for you, and many routers have built in support for this.

As an example, I have a Netgear FVS318 ProSafe VPN Firewall. I do not use it's VPN feature, but I can tell you I could use it with no other "special" software.

Just a thought.

Somebody set this up, so somebody knows how to do it and will be aware that you are moving and will make the nece changes!

Hopefully you have a indows server. It will then be easy enough to make a basic remote desktop setup via terminal services. There is a mac client that I'm sure Microsoft gives away.

You may want to look into Citrix's version though (msft licenses from them I believe) and you will have an easier time with the licensing issues. It would be a whole lot easier if you just used XP pro. Sorry.

Go into your router and setup virtual server with an IP that points to your server. You of course will have to select the ports you want open and that depends on the software you use to connect.

Apple Remote Desktop or this other program from Netopia named Timbuktu should work. You will also need to open a port(s) in your home and remote routers to access the server.

You could aslo try getting a copy of Norton's PC Anywhere, it allows you to connect to computers using VPN portocol any where there is a hotspot, high speed connection or if in a hotel room, dialup connection

in the experience that your distant ip use deepest ip , you cant connect with distant ip except you do ip forwarding / port forwarding on you gateway router. in the experience that your distant ip use Public Ip , you already can connect with distant ip. the question is what service of distant ip do prefer to get entry to ? a million. in case you want to do document move = deploy ftp server 2. in case you want to get entry to shell = deploy ssh / telnet server 3. in case you want to get entry to internet = deploy internet server and so on playstation : you dont let us know what do you want to connect
