France had been ruled by an absolutist monarchy for eons. The French people were sick of it, having to pay exorbitant taxes on everything because the French monarch also drained the royal budget from excessive spending on luxury items (Marie Antoinette is no exception).

the people were unable to eat -- which was the basis for the economy. no food production led to non payment of taxes which led to land seizures and more poverty since the french monarchy felt it was the duty of the peasants to pay off the national debt due to financing the american revolution and 200 years of constant war with britain.
