well there is the cyanide method of precipitating gold out of it's ore, but as that's acutely toxic smelting is becoming vogue again.

Gold is refined by Electrolysis. But the pure Gold of 24 Carat cannot be used for making any ornament, because it is very hard and not malleable. Some percentage of copper is added to make it malleable. Mostly, to make the Gold to 22 Carat.

Gold has been purified by a number of processes over the years. Smelting or simply melting gold away from the impurities is a very old process. Gold is very dense which is the basis of the old "panning for gold" technique of separating gold from sand. There are still a few operators who use mercury to float gold away from old impurities but this is marginal economically and has serious health and environmental problems. Gold is so nonreactive that chemical processes such as electrolysis are generally useless.

Electro-refining is used to get the pure Gold from its ore. This method is based on ELECTROLYSIS

Pure is a relative word. Mostly by fire, or smelting. The gold is heated till the impurities surface then they are skimmed off. This is repeated numerous times till the gold has reached specified purity then it is placed in molds and cooled.

Electrolysis? You guys are way off base.Reactivity series,in decreasing order: Potassium,Sodium,Calcium,
Magnesium,Aluminium,Zinc,Iron,
Tin,Lead,(Hydrogen),Copper,Mecury,Silver,
Gold,Platinum.

Electrolysis is used for the extraction of the first two or three metals. Gold is found in it's original state ie:Au ,not reacted with other elements. Seriously, you just need to wash the dirt off.

By melting it and the putting it in a new mold to have a totally new design.
