Yes, it is possible to detect pregnancy through a pap test. It is not the main purpose for having a pap test done, however. The main purpose is to detect abnormal cervical cells which may be pre-cancerous. However, it can detect inflammation in the cervix which could be a result of pregnancy. I would tell your friend to get a second test by another doctor or at least take a in-home pregnancy test. A pap is usually done during a yearly physical exam and other tests are commonly done at the same time. So, it may not be that the pap test was the test that told the doctor that your friend was pregnant.

A pap smear can tell a doctor if a woman is pregnant. A pap smear is done in a woman's cervix and they usually check a woman's uterus too. If your pregnant there are going to be changes in both. Not to mention they swab your cervix to check for abnormalities and well a pregnancy would come up in that testing because it would show you have elevated levels of hcg which is the pregnancy hormone. Not to mention usually before a pap smear they ask about your period if the dates match and the feel and enlarged uterus and the test results come back positive then they know she is pregnant. So if your friends doc said she is pregnant based on a pap smear then your friend is pregnant, congratulate her!

I don't thnk the pap results can show that. The doctor would know by looking down in that area. A lot of things change down there if you are pregnant and they can tell by looking so the doctor would have told your friend right there in the office probably.
When I went for my first exam before the urine test came back the OB assured me after my exam that I was def pregnant just by looking so.

Pap smears don't confirm pregnancy....there are physical changes to the uterus & cervix he might have noticed, but he would have told her right then. A urine test only takes a few minutes, so they would have told her at that visit as well. They wouldn't have done a blood test when they could just have her pee in a cup, but those results would also be available right away too.

Sounds fishy. If they did a urine test they'd know asap but if they took blood for some reason, I guess it could be possible.
Edited to add- yes there are changes in the cervix during pregnancy but why would the doctor wait a week before telling her- come on!

I would imagine she had some routine blood work done while she was at the Dr. Maybe he did a pregnancy test, just in case he had to order some x-rays or something. Who knows.

The doctor can tell by looking at the cervix. They also probably did a pregnancy test on her, mine does that every time I go.
If she doesnt' believe him, why doesnt she just go buy a home pregnancy test and check for herself?
