I was in telemarketing for over 12 years and elevated myself to the position of being hired by companies to set up telemarketing rooms starting from nothing but an empty room, setting up equipment, hiring & training new employees and disbursing appointments to the sales staff.

Telemarketing IS a good job for the right person, but not many can take the constant negatism already openly displayed in this column. Money is often made not only hourly but also in good commissions, as well.

Caution your friend to check out the businesses she applies to as there are sweat shop style workrooms out there, and don't hesitate to move on if she feels the business is disreputable. She will also find a difference between appointment setting (no license needed but relying on a salesperson to do his job before earning a commission) and outright selling on the phone (license required in some states but responsible for earning own commissions).

All in all, telemarketing is not the easy job most people think, but it can be very rewarding financially within the right company and for the right person. That being said, wish your friend good luck for me.
