I'm aware of the Hugo awards, but I'm more interested in who you, personally, like.

Nalo Hopkinson. Brilliant portrayal of black people and the use of Caribbean (sp) mythology for most of her stories (Neil Gaiman asked for her help in the Anansi Boys book).
She's very reminiscent of Octavia Butler who is my favorite author who also writes SF. Their styles are similar but Nalo focuses more on Caribbean (sp) traditions for her stories and her stories always seem to have a little twist at the end without feeling contrived.

I like Harry Turtledove and Lois McMaster Bujold, but my personal prejudices are not universal truths.

John Ringo, David Weber, Eric Flint, don't read that much sci-fi anymore. Mostly fantasy, thrillers, adventure and mysteries.
