who said anything about "comfortably"? Yes, they feel like 100 menstrual cramps all at once. The labor part is much more intense than the delivery part (that's cake by comparison.) But I must say, I felt very macho after each birth, nothing more exhilarating in my experience, especially when you get to look into your kid's eyes for the first time.

The weird thing is that it's not the same for everybody. Even two different babies from the same woman will be different labor experiences. The contractions started off not hurting for me, and progressed to the worst pain I had ever felt, but I have to tell you, as soon as the baby was born I didn't care that it had hurt before.
It's really true that the more relaxed you are, the less the contractions will hurt. That's what those prebirth classes are all about, learning techniques for relaxing during labor. I know relaxing helps, because my husband was my labor partner, except for 40 minutes when my mom subbed in for him so that he could get a meal. He was better at relaxing me than she was, and my labor pains hurt worse while she was there, and got better again when my husband was back.
As for the moment the baby comes out- if the baby is large, there is a chance it might tear the opening a little, so most doctors will choose to make a small cut, called an episiotomy, so the baby has a slightly bigger hole to exit and won't tear anything. The purpose is that a deliberate cut with a knife is easier to stitch back up after, and maybe heals more easily too. Between that, and whatever pain meds I had, the moment the baby rushes out did not hurt me. I felt a very fast whoosh of movement, and then an instant later, the doctor said, "You have a daughter."

Now days my thoughts are its not giving birth thats the hard part its being pregnant.. They have a epidural which i highly recommend well i did it cause im a baby when it comes to pain... But Yes contractions feel like cramps, only it hurts in your back everyone is diffrent though , but thats what mine felt like. Once you get a epidural your fine cant feel a thing, and once it wears off you hurt a little bit depending on how you delivered, but you have a new baby and its the best feeling in the world its worth all the pain... I have 2 kids and would have 4 more if it wasnt for having to be pregnant so if you can make it through the pregnancy you'll be fine, they have so much medicine now days that you can actually enjoy having your baby. I know it seems weird to think a whole baby comes out of you but our bodies are amazing things!!!!!! GOOD LUCK

it hurts.... Like hell....
and as far as menstural cramps... it'd be a good comparison as for the type of pain... but think cramps times 1000 every two minutes that arent just in the pelvic area and lower abdomen... they spread down into your legs ans up into your back.... as soon as they start to weaken the next one hits. with an epidural, you really just feel alot of pressure. For me thats what it was like.. <--- I had one child natural and one with the drugs.
I have had a child naturaly and my "hard"labor was only 4 hours long. They had to manually break my water (it broke on its own, but not all the way) I think that hurt more than any of the contractions, but even so... I only really felt the "bad" contractions for about an hour, and I dont know how a woman did it for hours on end without there being painkillers around.
THere are however different types of labor pains and some women have what is known as back labor and my best friend said that the epidural didnt even phase that part of it and she had 2 of them with her son.
as another woman mentioned, I had a shot of demoral with my "natural" delivery but I really dont count that s the head was already out when she finally put that thing in my IV.
Also, though it was easier having the epidural, as a whole I prefered the natural experience. I was up walking around about 2 hours after I was through in comparison to not even being able to take the 3 steps to the bathroom by myself with the epidural. I had to have a nurse come in and help with that for over 24 hours.

Well I wasnt sure I was going to have an epidural until I got to the hospital and they were one minute apart, they feel like the worst menstral cramps you will ever feel! i got the epidural and I felt nothing! The birth was easy From my first contraction to the oushing was three hours (I pushed for 30 minutes), they would tell me when I wa having a contraction and I would push, That feels like you are trying to go poop...sorry... thats what they tell you.
and when the baby came out I felt pressure but no pain, and when the placenta came out more pressure no pain, The pain came when the epidural wore off and I had an epesiotomy,
( i tore) if it wasnt for that I would have been GREAT!
P.S. I have many people who hate me for he easy labor I had!!! so this ws just my case...
-Crystal
PS Might be expecting my 2nd one now, Taking my 2nd test on Sunday
( period is 2 weeks late...)

ignore those dumb answers about kidney stones, poor comparison.
a woman's body is biologically programmed to give birth. most people give birth in a hospital or birth centre, so therefore the birth experience is medically managed by people who are trained to help as much as possible.
in most cases the baby doesnt come out of the vagina comfortably, there are stretches, tears or in the case of an assisted birth, a cut (episiotomy), which is a diagonal cut to allow the baby to come out before the baby becomes distressed.
not comfortable, but as we are all different sizes, it depends, if your baby is on the small side, it most likely will be a bit easier, though size doesnt absolutely determine the amount of pain experienced or duration of the delivery.
i think contractions do feel like menstrual cramps, except they are so strong, that your body literally goes into a kind of 'auto pilot', the pain takes over, just as it does if you feel any kind of strong pain. if you broke your leg, what would you do? the pain that gripped you would make you focus on the unforgettable fact - 'i have to get through this', you have to breathe through it. if you experienced great pain, you would deal with it one way or another, we are programmed to do this.
it helps to have a good support team to cheer you on, and pain relief if you choose it.
i endured 30hours of labour, it felt like forever, but i'm glad i didnt have to get a caesarean.

I'm going to be totally honest.
The labor pains were very much like menstrual cramps at first, but then toward the end, they felt like I needed to go to the bathroom really BAD. But they were not that bad at all. And I'm a wimp. I've had stomach viruses that were worse. I guess because with a stomach virus, you don't get a precious baby at the end, right? I didn't have any drugs, no epidural, no nothin'!
The actual delivery wasn't that bad either, but then my daughter was a preemie (33 weeks gestation) and weighed 4 pounds 14 ounces. She was born in two pushes. (She is fine now BTW).
Actual time of labor - 6 hours!
Seriously, once your baby is born, all of the agony will be worth it though... They will put that sweet baby in your arms, and the pain just goes away

I have had 3 childrens. the quite giving start section does no longer damage. right this moment after the shipping each and every ounce if soreness vanishes without delay! Very unusual. hard work hurts for hours. The contractions sense like severe tightening cramps then waves of relax then more beneficial severe tightening cramps. it really is variety of like menstrual cramps and the achy back soreness you sense on the prompt. I under no circumstances felt any splitting yet with my first son I dismayed from a three to a 10 in a remember if minutes and that i do undergo in recommendations a burning soreness unlike a hearth burn yet a unusual pulled muscle variety if burn. that's no longer terrible that's undesirable yet when it change into Gawd undesirable human beings doesn't have more beneficial than one toddler. Plus they have demirol and epidurals in case you desire soreness medicine.

Well, EVERY woman that has had a child will have a different experience. Some will say it hurt like hell and others will say it was bearable. But it always hurts. The contractions are much different than menstrual cramps and hurt alot more.

The contractions feel just like a really massive, painful menstrual cramp. The actual birth, I wouldn't describe as painful, just extremely uncomfortable from all of the pressure (OK, maybe a little painful) but the contractions are worse....It's impossible to describe the actual feeling...You would just have to experience it yourself. If you are expecting, I wish you good luck. :0)
