Why would the U.S. lie about Iran's nuclear capabilities?

"The UN nuclear watchdog has protested to the US government over a report on Iran's nuclear programme, calling it "erroneous" and "misleading".

In a leaked letter, the IAEA said a congressional report contained serious distortions of the agency's own findings on Iran's nuclear activity.

The IAEA also took "strong exception" to claims made over the removal of a senior safeguards inspector.

I think you've gotten IraN confused with IraQ. There were/are no "mass graves" in Iran. What the hell are you talking about? Why even bother answering if you can't tell the different between an 'n' and a 'q'.

The US is preparing its propaganda campaign to ensure the passive acquiescence of the American people (and hopefully those of a few other nations too) in case of a sustained military action against Iran.

Exactly the same process was followed in preparation for the invasion of Iraq. Back then too the IAEA protested (remember Mr Blix), but the World wasn't listening hard enough. This time around we're all a bit more alert to the lies of the Bush Administration and we're grateful for the bold, highly professional and neutral stance of the IAEA.

So why would the US make up stoires about Iran? They need us all to accept that America must take down Iran - its about oil, Iran has the World's third largest supply and right now, Iran's proxies are winning the battle for Iraq, which has the World's second largest supply of oil. If Iraq falls, then Saudi won't be far behind and it has the World's largest supply of oil.

America needs to neutralise Iran. It knows only one way - ultra-violence (not that it ever succeeds in its gung ho adventures).

The American propaganda machine is preparing the American people. Trouble is, there are organisations out there, like the IAEA, that still have some integrity - they have caught the US propagandists red-handed - and they can prove it.

There are lots of possible reasons.

One likely reason is that it is not the whole of the government that lied, some people may have known the full details some not.

A lot can be related back to the Industrial Military complex of the US Government. THe US probably more than a lot of develolped countries has a very very powerful arms lobby both military and weapons and security construction and private security. This provides a large incentive for the production of reports that require . high technology solutions that would be staffed by private security industry.

A clear example is the War in Iraq that has produced huge financial benefits to the US security sector. - (for all the talk of a free market the US government gave preferential treatment to US companies that it had strong personal links to - in any other country that's known as rent seeking behaviour).

I don't think they did. If anything they were mislead. IRAN was given several opportunities to allow the inspectors into the country to prove this. They refused over and over and over again. If they didn't have anything to hide then they should have let the inspection take place. There is no choice but to assume them guilty. They did it to themselves. Let's not forget about the mass graves etc...

Bush really thought he would 'take' Iraq and establish an American presence after the populace welcomed us flowers; and the dust died down. Halliburton and consortium would be making more millions rebuilding and we would have even more power over Iran and Syria. OIl OIl OIL!
Bush was/is aware that Iran did not have nuclear capability, but the information was stifled in the report to Congress. And once again the Administration waves the sword Of WMD!
It's also interesting to note that all the seeds of paranoia over Iran' "nuclear weapons" started when Israel did not kick Hezbollah's a**, even with the best weapons the US provided.
