To a degree, a minor misfortune can be deflated with humor. Humor can break the tension, and allow the injured party to put the misfortune in the past and get on with life.

If it were a serious misfortune, I would first try to explain to a friend why it was a misfortune. If they do not grasp the gravity of the situation, I would probably distance myself from them, and it would diminish or terminate our friendship, depending on the amount of the misfortune. If they do grasp the significance of the misfortune, the friendship may continue, but would be diminished, at least for a while.

If it weren't a friend I would say some words to them to make sure they stay distant from me.

The past year has been quite difficult for me, and the past seven years have not been a picnic. One young man, who had been a friend, came by my parent's house after it burned down, and started making jokes about the fire and my broken leg. My parents are old, and over 50 years of memories went up in smoke. I also lost much in that fire, and I didn't even live there. Plus, a hurricane has put a great strain on the building industry, so it will take a while for them to have a new house built.

I arranged to have him fired from his job, and he is no longer a friend. He is not a good person. A good person would have sympathized with my parents, and hundreds of them did. Perhaps he will learn a lesson, but he has lost a friend who actually shielded him a little from the abuses of his stepfather.

I try very hard to be a good person, but when someone goes so far out of their way to hurt me, I can be quite relentless. Which is why I try so hard to be a good person.

Hey, you can laugh at your own misfortune, that's not weird, it's healthy. I don't normally smile when someone kicks me in the balls, but that's hardly misfortune, just like not getting kicked in the balls isn't lucky. But when I am unlucky, for example by missing a train, I can laugh about it. And if my woes are really bad, such as being stood up at the altar.. Well, it'd be better to laugh it off. Not sure if I could, but it'd be the best remedy.

I'd appreciate their empathy for the human condition, nobody I know has ever lived a life free from misfortune. If they choose to laugh in the face of mine, I would appreciate that it is nervous laughter because they feel fortunate to not be standing in my shoes.
It would be unfortunate if someone missed a train, leaving me stranded, though I would forgive the injustice so long as they didn't get cold feet...!

Its usually why people luaugh. Think of slapstick, people laughing at others falling down. Or ANY Rodney Dangerfield joke.

It makes us feel temporarily better since we all know we are really pathetic. Its arest from that. At least somebbody has it worse for awhile. Its sad and ideally we would al be confident and smart and beautiful and wouldn't laugh at the misfortune of others.

Such a person is not worthy of being in touch with; infact, even his shadow would cast evil upon others.

Fake a smile and walk away. Anything else just wouldn't be productive.
