You can purchase an additional 5.1 Surround Sound card to install in your system without having to disable your existing sound card on your motherboard.
Typically adding a sound card involves removing the screws on the back of your PC, taking off the top of the computer, removing the screw that holds in the "PCI card plate," inserting the new sound card, and then screwing it in. It's fairly straight forward, and most sound cards have decent instructions to walk you through the process.
You can also have two sound cards on your PC, but ideally you'll want to disable your sound card that is built-in on your motherboard. The easiest way to disable it (assuming Windows XP) is to right-click on MY COMPUTER, select PROPERTIES, then the HARDWARE tab, then the DEVICE MANAGER button. Find your sound card under "Sound, video, and game controllers," and right-click on it and select DISABLE. Now you can install the new sound card (according to the instructions above or better yet the ones that come with the card).
Plenty of 5.1 options for you out there. See:

Just put the card into the slot and screw it in place, only 1 screw, if you have an old sound card remove that first.
Boot up and install the drivers (CD that came with your soundcard)

If its built into the motherboard, you cant change it. Disable it in your BIOS, and then add a new card to a free PCI slot.

Hire someone to do it. If you're unsure how to change the cards on the board, you'll end up causing more harm than good.
