I have a female and male rabbit. Both were altered May 2006. Well, last night my male began chasing the female around. He was nudging her like he did before he was neutered to mate with her. She finally stood still, and presented herself to him as she did when they did mate. Anyway, he mounted her and humped away a few times and stopped. What the heck is going on ? Can a neutered animal get frisky and have and erection and my altered female was willing to mate ??? Any insight would be helpful. I tried looking on web and could not find anything out. Is this normal behavior ? It was a first for him since the operation.

Well done. I must say I am very impressed that you have had your rabbits neutered and spayed. It is the safest option for them. Most neutered animals will still mate, however, no sperm is released and no babies will be born. As much as the sight of it is not pleasant, your male rabbit is clearly happy, and you do not run the risks of having unwanted baby rabbits!

Yes they can still "try" to mate. Just because they are fixed doesn't mean the urge will stop. Ecspecially, if they were fixed kind of later than the average rabbits. I have seen this behavior plenty in dogs and horses. Say if a horse gets gelded late, (they call that proud cut) he will still act like a stallion and he believes he is fully "capable". I have seen them mount mares and they usually have to be seperated, because they become to aggressive.

I wouldn't worry to much about this behavior, as long as the male isn't being to difficult with the female. If he is, it may be a good idea to seperate him for a couple of days, until it passes. From what I understand about rabbits is though they can breed a lot, they usually perfer a certain time of the year and a type of moon, like full moon, I believe. This gets their juices flowing so to speak.

Anyway, Good Luck

i also have a male rabbit. brought him in from the street and had no idea how to take care of rabbits but i couldnt bare to see him abandoned. after the first two months i noticed he was extremly horny and made a mess everywhere. took him to the vet to have him neutured and the very next day i brought him home, he began to hump my foot again (he use to that too often before) and i also freaked out thinking...'they didnt really fix him??' i was already planning on calling the vet the next morning. but however, he stopped from that one time he did it. since then he hasnt gone again.

my sister says it could have just been the natural reaction he always had and after the operation he still had it mentally not physically. it would be something temporary that he would eventaully realize.

its about over a year since he's been neutered and only one time about 2 months ago did come up on my foot, but he didntm ove, he kinda just stood there like saying...'uh..how did it go again?' and left after 2 minutes.

it sounds kinda odd though that yur rabbit had that reaction after months since he had it done. however, dont stress about it, he would eventually forget about it later realizing he doesnt have real urge. if only he continues and continues constantly then go see a vet, and get your money back too.

Of course....

While the spaying or nuetering may affect some hormone levels... and the cycle may not be as it once was...

Animals are instinctive so yes they will still have sex or attempt it.

Wont hurt them so no point in worrying about it.

The only trouble you co uld get is if the female wants none of it and the male gets agressive... as long as that does not go on t en dont worry.

It was a responsible thing you did to have your pet rabbits fixed if you could not handle more..

Hope this helps!

i guess it surely relies upon on what number toddler rabbits you desire. Rabbits reproduce like loopy. In some animals being fastened mellows out their recommendations-set, makes them a lot less aggressive. responsible puppy possession is having your pets spayed and neutered as there are shelters full of undesirable pets of all sorts. Why is having your puppy fastened any diverse than a vasectomy or tubal ligation to dodge being pregnant? My hubby has been snipped.

Humping is a means of establishing dominance in rabbit society. I have 2 females who hump each other.

It's kinda funny, they do it to feel better about themselves...they get really angry when I brush them, so they'll run around, throwing things, and then they'll hump their partner.

I also have a male and female couple that will occaisionally hump each other. It is said that is bunny love and they do it to reassure their love for one another.

But it isn't sexual, really. Just make sure that if the rabbit is recently spayed that they do not reopen a stitch.

Spaying or neutering does not stop the "want to", just the consequences. Dogs, cats, humans, rabbits....
