Forget what all the idiots are saying. This is not a silly question. It's actually sort of intriguing.

Yes, insects fart. They may not make the same sounds that us big mammals make, but they do flatulate.

To the person who said that insects don't have lungs, there have been findings of caterpillars with lungs. Here is a link to the caterpillar article:
http://www.nature.com/nature/journal/v391/n6663/full/391129a0_fs.html
There are even some spiders (though, technically arachnids and not insects) that have lungs.
I am not trying to prove that insects can breath, because many do not have lungs. But to claim that insects have no lungs would be an incorrect statement.

why wouldnt they? can anyone answer that? just because they cant hear it people say no but actually humans dont always hear themselves fart much less an insect. because it passes in small increments. furthermore what exactly constitutes a fart? the passage of plain air or a specific gas?

Well, if you go out into the countryside, where it's nice and quiet, lie down in the middle of an unoccupied meadow, close your eyes and listen - really, really hard - for a few minutes, maybe, just maybe you will learn for yourself.

Also, isn't it amazing the number of people who answer these queries who DON'T know what they're talking about, but answer just for the hell of it.

Someone once said, 'The wise man speaks when he has something to say. The fool speaks when he has to say something'. Anyone recognise yourself?

No but they sure sh*it a lot! Did you know that every time a fly lands on something, the energy it akes him to fly away the start of the flight the fly actually leaves a spec of sh*it as he goes, so next time you see a fly land on your food, think before eating!
