something like this http://eor.rulesthe.net/chainmail/pics/Pursesidesmall.jpg or this http://www.spiderchain.com/images/archive/misc/bag_dice_large.jpg

would aluminum, steel, iron, silver, nickel, copper, and/or a combination of these all work (or not, as the case may be)? do they have specific frequencies from which they'll shield, or are all proper faraday cages EMF free?

would it need to be entirely closed (net-like bag cinched, purse flap folded over into closed position), or would a five sided cube work (like a bottomless chicken wire cage i can slip over my computer monitor) ?

i'm sure you were joking, but i'm interested in the non visible spectrum. cute, though.

why not chicken wire? it's, generally, conductive, last i bothered to check. ahem - stop speculating out loud!

a word to the wise, in fact - they're on to the tinfoil. the arms race continues, however. i, now, need only design countermeasures to the detection of lying through brain scanning ("it would make obsolete the entire justice system!", my friend exults. "do you really believe lawyers, judges, and the politicians that "rise" from their ranks, would allow such a thing to relieve them of their livelihoods [and other "perquisites"]?", i reply, "and that's just ONE speed bump!". i have weird friends... now hush.).

i don't carry a purse! the question is entirely theoretical!

ok... well let me start of by explaining the theory.

Because of the properties of an electric feild, if you have a closed conductor, the area inside of the conductor will be sheilded from an electric field.

Now a faraday cage is just a cage that is made out of a conductor. It turns out that in most cases this will also sheild the inside from all electric feilds. ( i have also heard that a decent faraday cage can be made out of chicken wire)

The way that this phenominon was first discoverd was by hanging a charge in a metal cup, and noticing that other charges can not effect it from the out side. (so a 5 sided container will work if the E feild is comming from the sides or bottom)

now as per your question. The bags that you pointed out (providing that they do not have any coating on them that would make them non conductive) would shield a E feild (like the one that a theft protection system at a store has... oops did i say that out loud)

but then again you could always just line the inside of your pures with tinfoil or something like that.

If you can see through it, it isn't acting as a Faraday cage for visible frequencies. ;)
