No disrespect to the D&D crowd but I don't want to be a warlock. I suppose I'm looking for an rpg that's a bit like a modern day soap opera where I can bring in an original character. Does such a thing exist?

I'm involved with KINGHTSONLINE domain.
It's free and its very cool graphical environment.
You get to build a character or up to 4 characters, interact with others and form a clan.

The Sims Online maybe? Never played it, but it sounds like the kind of thing you're looking for.
