I just discovered that a freind's oven pilot light has been out (for almost over 3 months) there is a smell of gas in the oven. is there a risk of explosion trying to light? whats the safest way to try to handle this situation?

Turn off the gas to the oven and air out the house. If it repeatedly does this, buy a new oven (they don't have pilot lights).

not likely if the pilots are still on/functioning on the stovetop. There is always a small flow of gas in the stove and the buildup smells. I just got a new apt in April with my first gas stove and it scared me a little, but it was fine. Maybe call a professional to be on the safe side though.

oh hell yes. turn off the gas to the oven, open the oven door, and ventilate the area for 30 minutes or more. Then you can turn the gas back on and manually relight the pilot with a match. Check the instructions printed on the oven someplace they may differ.

Call where your gas supply comes from ....they should send some one out with a meter to check for gas as well as light the pilot for you.

Ventilate, run away, call your gas company. Preferably not from inside the house! Phones, lights, any spark can set off the gas, so please be careful!!

Tell the gas company it is a problem and let them come and check the stove. It may seem to only be the pilot, but then again, the pilot may be clogged, it may go out again, there may be other leaks, etc.

Too dangerous to fool around with, so please get expert help!!

Have someone that isn't so ridiculous light the pilot.
