it's more complex than that.
you should always be honest when answering questions.
but you should connect empathically with the other person's feelings and act of compassion when you do it.
study marshall rosenberg's nonviolent communication to learn how to be honest without getting that angry response.

Well...If they ask for an opinion, it's to hear the TRUTH, no?
Real friends give REAL opinions, if they get mad, that's their problem, they are the one who asked, aren't they? You should keep on being honest, because some people really appreciate that!!!
If you're not totally honest with your friends, then maybe you aren't really a FRIEND.

Such a Disagreeable Man
(W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan)
from Princess Ida, Act I
No. 6: SONG (Gama)
"If you give me your attention"
King Gama.
If you give me your attention, I will tell you what I am:
I'm a genuine philanthropist — all other kinds are sham.
****Each little fault of temper and each social defect
In my erring fellow-creatures, I endeavour to correct.
To all their little weaknesses I open people's eyes;
And little plans to snub the self-sufficient I devise;
I love my fellow creatures — I do all the good I can —
Yet ev'rybody says I'm such a disagreeable man!
And I can't think why!
To compliments inflated I've a withering reply;
And vanity I always do my best to mortify;
A charitable action I can skillfully dissect;
And interested motives I'm delighted to detect;
I know ev'rybody's income and what ev'rybody earns;
And I carefully compare it with the income-tax returns;
But to benefit humanity however much I plan,
Yet ev'rybody says I'm such a disagreeable man!
And I can't think why!
I'm sure I'm no ascetic; I'm as pleasant as can be;
You'll always find me ready with a crushing repartee,
I've an irritating chuckle, I've a celebrated sneer,
I've an entertaining snigger, I've a fascinating leer.
To ev'rybody's prejudice I know a thing or two;
***I can tell a woman's age in half a minute — and I do.
But although I try to make myself as pleasant as I can,
Yet ev'rybody says I'm such a disagreeable man!
And I can't think why!
Chorus.
He can't think why!
Gama & Chorus.
I/He can't think why!

Sometimes there are ways not to answer a question and yet, be seen to adreess the question. For example, if asked it they ask if you think they look fat, you might just say,I always enjoy seeing you, or else, tyou might say something like you brighten up many people's lives. It is called deflection, where you never answer fdirectly. You might also say something like: Well, do you think you are a bit overweight? If so, how can I be supportive.

Sometimes a person can be a little too direct with their answers....Is that you? Perhaps softening the advice would be okay. For instance, if someone asked you if they looked fat in an outfit, don't say "Yes, you look fat in that". A better response would be "Well, I think that outfit you had on the other day flatters your figure more than this one". It takes practice to be able to give advice without the sting!

i think the truth is always the best answer if people dont want to hear the truth then they shouldnt be asking questions in the first place because you are being a better person not trying to sugar coat things just to make people feel better because in the long run the truth will only make them a stronger person

I happened to be very honest..what's in my heart is on my mouth..I fail sometimes to play with words or to be nice in an exaggerated manner..but I kinda found out that sometimes when u're quiet that's the best thing u can do..it's better than lieing or saying stupid things coz u're too honest coz that might hurt people..if u have sth good to say just say it, otherwise, dont:)

God is a absolute
God and he only speaks truth so we should do the same. When they ask you a question, simply ask them, do you want the truth?If they say no then turn and walk away. the truth always works.Jesus said I am the way,the truth and the life, no man can come to the Father unless he goes through me.

That's a sign of a true friend, being able to take criticism, and give criticism and take or understand it as a positive note.
Your friends are there to help you, not take you down, even if it hurts sometimes. they are being truthful

Maybe you should ask them if they want you to be brutally honest before you answer.

I honestly like my friends. I like the interaction with them even during times of disagreement.
