Polar molecules have an end with an electrical charge. Non-polar aren't charged. This is why oil (non-polar) and water (polar) don't mix. This is how it is in chemistry. Like dissolves like.

in a polar molecule, the electrons are shared unequally between atoms
water is polar because the e-'s spend more time on the oxygen than the hydrogens

in a non-polar molecule, the electrons are shared equally between the atoms
diatomic oxygen is non-polar

go back to chemistry. either the molecule has an overall dipole or it doesn't. if it does it's leaning towards polar, but in the basic sense polar compounds can be dissolved in polar substances like water.
