I lived in Alaska for 17 years...specifically in Fairbanks, which is the 2nd largest city (about 80,000 people in the whole 450 square mile Borough) and it's in the Interior of Alaska. It's dark and cold in the winter, and sunny and warm in the summer. Now...the thing to remember is that Alaska is HUGE...and there are different climate zones. Homer is in the southern part, as is Juneau, Ketchikan, Valdez and other smaller communities. And that has more of a Seattle climate year round. And Anchorage, the largest city, (about 250,000 people) does have it's cold winters, but no where near as cold as Fairbanks, Nome, Barrow, etc.
But no matter where you live in Alaska...you will always be able to be near outdoor adventures...and trust me...you will meet a man...they are everywhere, and they're just waiting to meet you. So give it a try. Also...there are lots of great web sites about Alaska, that will give you all of the relocation information you could want. Just Google or Yahoo "Alaska Relocation Information" and you'll find out lots of info.

I was born in Michigan, and drove to Alaska about fifteen years ago (well, I was in the car. I didn't actually drive). It all depends on what you like: Do you like tons of people, city life? California then. If you like snow: Alaska. There will be more to do in California though. If you aren't into hiking, sightseeing, snowmobiling, kayaking, being outdoorsy, you will probably be bored. We have movie theaters and small malls. No one very famous comes up here, and if they do, it's never for very long. Extremely cold winters: Alaska Excruciatingly hot summers: California. Alaska summers are actually very pleasent. 60-90's, and it's not unbearable. PFDs (you can apply after you've lived here for two years), No sale tax. (Alaska)

Sounds like an awesome time for you to explore Alaska a bit deeper. Just reading what you said makes it seem like you are very much wanting to go there, for new adventures and possibly a flame to light your fire in the Alaskan cold. The rest of the country is typical to be working in. Alaska is atypical. Get your career jumpstarted and have fun doing it.

I think that you have answered your own question. There is nothing holding you to Cali. It sounds like you are an outdoors type who would enjoy the wide open spaces of Alaska.
However, you need to think about the people you will be interfacing with up there. I imagine that a majority of them are tough minded individualists who don't much like tree huggers.
Do you think that you are tough enough? If so, go.

well, your evaluating the pros and cons. that s the way to make Any major decision. Can you give the job a try, if you hate it move here to California. Dress warm, they have new fibers, in clothing that work great. Not to mention the men are HOT there. I hope that helps. Good luck, Lori

If your job offer includes any sort of penalty for leaving - think again. There are plenty of places in the 'lower forty eight' that an outdoor type can enjoy life.

buy an airticket and go to alaska for the winter and do all the things you think you gonna do by pretending you are living there already. If you had a terrible experience... don't pack your bags. if you still think its lovely up there despite the cold... you know what to do~

Go, girl. Adventures are always healthy. Layering your clothes or a man can always keep you warm. I'm sure there are plenty of both.
