peaches:
Other contries may have freedom and liberty but we have a refined version that has set us apart from the others.

OMG, peaches you really do live in a bubble. No wonder the rest of the world thinks USA is so clueless to reality.

Can a poor man become the President of the USA?

No, of course not, the President always comes from the the big boardrooms or the established dynasties, selected beforehand by the business elite of the USA. This is not democracy.

Is America characterised by its belief in freedom and equality between people and a system of government based on this belief, in which power is either held by elected representatives or directly by the people themselves?

Absolutely not. If America believed in equality between people a poor man could be President. If power was truly held by elected representatives or the people themselves then Bush would have gone long ago. In America power is held by the President and his immediate cronies. This is not democracy.

There are better examples of democracy, mostly in Europe. True democracy carries its own problems, but these are the problems of truly living with the reality of freedom and equality - they're problems I'm pleased to live with.

I don't think the USA is a democracy...it is often referred to as a democracy...but that is not what it was founded as. It was founded as a Republic. I am including links to some videos that talk about the United States Constitution and explain the difference between a republic and a democracy. Best definition I've heard of a democracy is 3 wolves and a sheep voting on whats for dinner!

Bush did not win democratically in 2000. In a true democracy, the winner is the one with the most votes. Even if the victory is by one vote, winner is winner according to the democracy principles. The Electoral College is just a way to manipulate the election results. Al Gore won the Presidential Election in 2000.

I do agree the US is prosperous country, but is not a "true" democracy.

Last I checked USA isn't a democracy, seeing as each individual doesn't have 1.0 votes. The value of their vote depends on which state they live. I haven't done the maths, (I can't be bothered) but the inhabitants of the coastal states have a vote less than 1.0 and the middle states have more than 1.0.
And this is without taking in consideration the "swing state effect", where one particular vote would be much more valuable.

The USA is not the most democratic country far from it. The most un-democratic thing you can do is impose 'democracy' on a country through bloodshed and against the internationally accepted UN process.

Gingerbread only man: What Democracy in USA & for whom? It is non-existant from my perspective. I have no rule or control over anything starting with my vote i cast for selecting candidates whom i prefer not to have, in fact i am against the existance of representative government we do not need them! Especially the true role they are getting away with hidding from the public now! I am for a true democracy where the magority of legal citizen's have total rule & control of everything like control over Money/Power/Wealth etc!

The only reason the US gets away with everything is cos they have power in numbers.
Just let them be, we know they are not the only country with democracy, but let dream.

I suppose that since we are a country that more than likely is financially contributing to these other countries we are always a target for thinking our way is the best way. However we are a prosperous country. Hate or love or president we are a force to be reckoned with and I for one am happy that we are able to do all that we do away from Home while still being a country that continues to grow. Even our poorest citizens are in a better position than many outside of our states.
