Register with the TPS (tele preference service) - it stops all sales calls!

Tell them to hold on a minute, put the phone next to a CD player, go do your own thing while the caller listens an arabic or indian song... once you are back near the phone just hang up.
You can also try putting them down by asking why they are doing that miserable job of cold calling people and tell them that you are sorry for them, etc.
Seriously, you will not be able to stop these as the calls are dialed automatically from a database. The best is if you can get your name off that list which is almost impossible.

There is the national do not call registry. This seems to disuade about half of them.
I have not had a call like that in 6 months since I adopted an agressive go away program.
The people making these calls get paid minimum wage plus a bonus based on sales and completed calls per hour.
I keep them talking and fake interest for at least 45 minutes then it's how's minimum wage feel NOT interested.
Word gets arround in the system "costs them $"

Next time you recieve a voters register, make sure you mark that you do not want to be included on the amended register. This is their source of info. the best way to get rid of them is to waste their time. Sound interested, then get people to measure you up for a conservatory on the 12th floor of a high-rise building, or fit a kitchen in a bus stop, or ask for a package to be sent to Windsor Castle. Most of these people get paid on success and if you waste their time they will give up rather quickly.

Make sure you have signed up to the national do not call list. This will take up to a month to take effect. They can still call you if you have done business with them in the last few months. Before they can go into their spiel, tell them "Put me on your do not call list." They must stop calling or you can report them. One other thing -- do not register for the chances to win an automobile you may see at the local mall. The fine print in many of these gives permission to ignore the do not call list and to "share" your information with their associates. I other words, gives permission to sell your information to other telemarketers.

If all else fails, buy a whistle and blow it loudly into the phone when they call.

BT and other phone services offer some services to stop this, but you can ask for their id and report them too..
BT say
To bar unsolicited calls you can register on the Telephone Preference and Fax Preference Schemes. You can register online or by calling 0845 070 0707 (24hrs, 7 days a week). You may also find our Choose to Refuse service helpful in stopping unwanted or nuisance calls.

I got rid of loads by asking where they got my number from and telling them this was a dedicated line for police services and that if they continue to use it then legal action would be taken under the new terrorism laws introduced. I have not had any since. And it feels sooooo good to do it to them. (hehehe)

Call the 800 number. Search for "stopping telemarketers from calling" and it should pop up with the govt site with the number.

What I did is that I rented one of those Mafia movies and recorded a conversation between two mafia guys talking lots of hardcore stuff and recorded it in my answering machine. The calls dropped 2/3 or more!!!
