When I say goes blank I mean the monitor goes black, and there is no sound from anywhere-the tower light is still on and will not go off- I turn off the surge switch and then turn it back on- the tower button goes off-then I can restart. This happens randomly some days 2 times other days it is ok-My puter is a XP about 5 years old-do I need a new tower or could it be the monitor.HELP HELP AND THANK YOU

Change your sleep settings. Open My Computer. Click on Control Panel. Click on Power Options. Change Turn Off Monitor to Never.

That should fix the problem.

To shut down, learn the steps with the monitor on, using ONLY the keyboard. That will give an orderly power down.

Open a 'DOS' box, run SFC /scannow and have the i386 folder available [CD] to have file repaired. [ /? explains]

No Sound? No fan noise? then maybe the power supply [+12v] is shutting down. If so, the shut down described won't work, but tells you where the problem is.

Other possible is a BIOS chip failing. Or monitor power cable.

you should plug your pc right into a various video reveal, so that then you will understand if that's the video reveal, or the pc. if that's the pc you could pick a sparkling photographs card.
