Give it to someone that really needs it, like a family memeber for school or maybe donate it to a children aid organization.

There are computer recycling centers in many communities. They erase the hard drive then make any reasonable repairs needed. They sell the computers at very low prices. The money goes to charitable causes. Ask your local computer store if they know of the nearest recycling center if you can't find it in your phone book. I'm sure that you can also name your town and ask here.

Wipe out the memory with a progam you can easily download on the net. Then use a strong magnet on it. Then you can sell it. But the best way to get rid of a computer, I personally feel is to samsh it and burn.

In our area, you can drop them off at the local university. They strip it of any usable parts, recycle what they can, then dispose of the rest. It's a free service. Check your yellow pages for recycling centers.
It's much "greener" than putting it at the curb. Cheaper, too, since our town charges $20-50 to haul away used appliances and computers.

Set it outside next to the curb. Lots of people pick them up to see if there is a simple way to fix them and then resell them. They also use them for spare parts. Same for monitors - sometimes they can be altered.
My son-in-law got a very nice clean up-to-date monitor out of a a dumpster that his shop shared with a business next door. When turned on, it had purple streaks on the screen. I degaussed it and he is still using it.

I took my old computer out in the country to my uncles farm and shot it five times with a Remington 30-06, and then buried it.

You can donate it to the Salvation Army, Goodwill or nearby charity.
You can sell it on eBay or craigslist.com.
You can offer it for free through freecycle.org
But whatever you do, make sure you delete the Hardrive using Department of Defense standards. There's a nice free application that will do it with a simple floppy. Please, please use it.

you might be able to donate it, either to a school or maybe a women't shelter or a retirement center (old folk's home).
Might even be able to write it off on your taxes!
