You would have written your last Yahoo question. Depending on the kind of viper you would be in one kind of unbelievable pain or another and would die pretty soon. Snakes are not fast enough to chase after a wounded animal so they have evolved extremely toxic venom that hits your nerves or your blood vessels very quickly..

Vipers by definition are nasty! They are all venemous. So the answer to your question would depend largely on what viper it was that chomped you. The most common in South Africa is the Gaboon Viper. Notoriously Lazy, Extremely venemous, lightning fast striking power and a fast acting Haemotixic venom. They like to bask in the sun, and just like their cousins, the Puff Adders, they often not, unlike other snakes, move out of your way when they hear you coming. Sharp eyes save ankles! Trouble is they are well camouflaged too. It has LONG hypodermic fangs. You would feel intense pain first, followed by burning at the bite wound. The wound would bleed considerably. Blood cells are destroyed by H toxin, so bruising will becaome apparent quickly. The poison is often compounded by infection from the fangs, so untreated bites could lead to death after several agonizing days by pulmonary failure, Gangrene or any number of nasty ailments associated with toxins and infections. Don't get bitten buddy.

There are many types of viper all over the world. Some extremely poisonous and some less so. Whatever the type, go straight to a hospital. If for example it is a gaboon viper (Africa) - you'll probably be dead before you get there. On the other hand, the common adder (UK) is unlikely to kill a healthy adult, children and the aged or weak hearted however......
So, play safe.

BtW - one answer here is totally wrong. Vipers are spread out all over the world and the ONLY british viper is the adder - definitely poisonous (and a protected species - it's illegal to kill them).

It depends on what kind of viper you are bitten by, some are much more dangerous than others (and they are all VENOMOUS, not poisonous... one of my pet peeves). In general the vipers of the United States are not that venomous, and it's fairly common for a healthy adult to survive a bite without treatment (don't go out and pick one up though, you'll no doubt suffer excruciating pain and possibly lose a limb, but you may SURVIVE, still very dangerous). Some vipers are HIGHLY dangerous though, but in general much less toxic than Elapids (taipans, coral snakes, cobras etc...)... Due in part to the types of venom. Viper venom is (generally) cytotoxic and attacks local tissue, while Elapid venom screws up the nervous system.

Short answer: It's bad, and you don't really need to try it firsthand.

Well it would depend on what sort of viper bite you. Different snakes have different venom that attacks different parts of your body and internal organs. Also, it would depend on if you had an allergy to the venom. Some people are allergic to bee stings some are not, if you get stung by a bee it swells up and itches, if you are allergic to a bee sting it would cause you to go into anaphylactic shock, the same applies to snake bites. For some reason, people are prone to being allergic to the anti venin given to treat snake bites. If you have the Discovery Channel watch Venom ER.

Either way, seek medical advice asap!

If you are a young healthy person, you would have the same symtoms as flu but it would not be fatal, which would be the opposite if you were to be biten by a black mamba, you will die a horrible death in 5 minnets. We are talking british vipers i assume. For others painfull death will result, in asia they are very toxic.

Vipers are British snakes and therefore not poisonous but it could still get infected so it would need to be cleaned out properly

It would depend on what kind of snake bit you..
Some are much deadlier than others...
In any event, you would want to get to a hospital ASAP
and if possible you want to be able to tell the hospital
what kind of snake it was that bit you...
If you don't know what kind of snake it was and you
killed it then bring it with you to the hospital...

........Depends what kind of snake bit you, some are really poisonous and will kill you within a very short time. Others will make you very ill, which would force you to go to hospital. Otherwise you would probably die of a very painful death.
