Sorry, quick question. What is the point of having a weeks worth of sugar pills in birth control? Why would you want a week break from birth control. CAn you skip it and not take the sugar pill and just have months and months of taking birth control pills without the sugar pills?

Yeah, but what if you skipped the sugar pills, and went on through birth control through your period? Why wouldn't you want birth control on your period?

The avoidance of menstruation through extended or continuous administration (greater than 28 days of active pills) of combination oral contraceptives (COCs) has gained legitimacy through its use in treating endometriosis, dysmenorrhea, and menstruation-associated symptoms. Avoidance of menstruation through continuous use of COCs for reasons of personal preference may have additional advantages to women, including improved compliance, greater satisfaction, fewer menstrual symptoms, and less menstruation-related absenteeism from work or school.

The few studies that reported menstrual symptoms found that the extended cycle group fared better in terms of headaches, genital irritation, tiredness, bloating, and menstrual pain. Five out of the six studies found that bleeding patterns were either equivalent between groups or improved with continuous-dosing regimens.

Evidence from existing randomized control trials comparing COCs given continuously (greater than 28 days of active pills) to traditional monthly cyclic dosing (21 days of active pills and 7 days of placebo) is of good quality. However, the variations in type of pill and time length for continuous dosing make direct comparisons between regimens impossible.

The sugar pills are there because the inventors of the pill thought that women would want to have a regular period while on it. The period you have on the pill is not a "real" period; it's breakthrough bleeding caused by taking that week off the hormones. You're taking a week off from the hormones, but you're not taking a week off from the protection provided against pregnancy. You CAN skip the placebos and move straight on to the next pack, but you won't get a period (this is where the inspiration for Seasonale came from, women skipping periods on the pill.) And, of course, since there's nothing active in them, you can take the week off from the hormones without taking the placebos as long as you remember when to start your new pack; I've been on the pill on and off for 20 years and I've never actually swallowed the sugar pills... I just take a week off and start the new pack when I'm due to start it. They're just placeholders.

The pill has hormones in it that prevent you from ovulating. You dont need the hormone during your period that is why you take the sugar pill with no hormone. In order to get the most and effective benefits of your birth control pills take them all. Don't skip.

Some people have terrible memories. When I first started the pill I may have started a day late or early were it not for those useless green pills in my pack. Ofcourse, that probably means I shoudn't have been on them, but I never got preggers so i was using them right I guess.

The pills can be skipped, they are mainly if you just want to continue the routine of taking a pill everyday.
