Rhapsody. Is an awesome program. It does cost $10 a month, but you can do all those things you said and more. You can type in a song and it will tell you every artist that has ever done it. Then you can click on it and listen to the whole song. It tells you (just like you said) albums and if you like this you will like this. It also tells you who inspired the artist you are listening to and who's music they inspire. Related projects etc.
You can search for info under Artist, Track, Album, Keyword or Composer. You can browse hundreds of genres including spoken word...You can create play lists. The home page tells you the current top artists. You can look at staff picks, new releases, just added items...
Of course you can burn from this site.
You can create your own radio stationsby adding your favorite artists (you enter 9 and they fill in the blanks with similar artists.).
It is an absolute necessity for musicians and djs. I love it and would pay double for the service I get.

I assume your describing Pandora.com in your comments

Whats wrong with that ?

It does a lot of the legwork for you. I wouldn't want to be walked through an artist album by album, music is about expereince, not prescriptive listening.

Not an answer, I know. But I just wanted to defend Pandora, its brought me to some great new artists
