Put another way, if I'm looking at two bedsheets, and one is 500 threadcount and one is 300 threadcount, are the 500 threadcount sheets definitely better than the 300 threadcount sheets? Or are there other things to consider (e.g., the type of cotton used)?

A high thread c ount is good, but check for fabric types. I find sateen 400 TC the softest and most comfortable.

The higher the thread count the softer the sheet. There are many fabrics used for sheets. Cotton is the most comfortable in my opinion. Satin type sheets look cool but don't stay on the bed for crap. Do yourself a favor and spend the few extra bucks on a nicer set. You will get more mileage out of them.

I never paid attention to thread count until I bought a 500 thread count set on sale. They are SOOO nice. I'm afraid I'm hooked now. So soft and comfortable. The only other thing I pay attention to is whether or not the fitted sheet has deep pockets because that's what I need for my mattress.

Honestly, I've never looked at thread count. Sometimes you can access a corner of the sheet. If possible, I just do a touch test. I pick the one I like best.

Personally, I've only been buying jersey cotton (t-shirt) sheets, flannel, or fleece. I'm always cold and these keep me warm. The t-shirt sheets are the best.

You will also need to know the size of your mattress the pockets very. I prefer a high thread count it will pay off in the long run and you will be happier with the look and wear.
