Any good crew would lay drop cloths down, mess in unavoidable in some areas. If you are having your windows replaced there will be alot of dust, nothing you can do. I mean I have hired contractors to install new wiring systems in occupied units before there is only a point to which mess can be control. However, since you have not specified what kind of mess I can not be more specific. Email me at e_barker@yahoo.com

Depends on the builder's respective ethics. It differs a lot from builder to builder. There are also green builders who leave very little waste because they conserve lumber and supplies better. Many do because they just have never seen the benefit of doing it another way (i.e., we have always done it this way so why change?).

because they are usually men and men (generally) focus hard on doing one job at a time rather than 5 at once like women do. this means that they're not as aware of what else is going on around them because they're so focused on getting the job done that they're getting paid for. so if they're doing something in your house, they don't actually see or realise that they are making muddy footprints everywhere. and if they're doing the outside of your house, they don't realise that they're treading on the flowerbed. if they're young, they probably have the 'don't care' attitude, they're generally not quite so bad if they're older. those are the conclusions i've come to anyway, because even builders who are friends aswell make a mess, so it's obviously not a malicious thing.

when i was an apprentice sparky i was told I was too tidy because i didn't throw the wire strippings everywhere !

your buidling plot is thier office. I fill my desk with junk so i think builders are entitled to do the same.

You can't make an omellete without cracking a few eggs.

Wohooo, I've been saying that to our builder for 2 months now, every day he makes a mess ...I'm delighted I've been able to write it into an answer, thanks a lot.

They are over payed and over lazy.
I had new windows fitted the men put down protective sheets, and lo and behold there was more dirt ect. under the sheet than on top. The only thing they had to sweep up with was an old yard brush.I chased them.In future tradesmen will not get paid till the clearing up is done.Wine fly

sometimes messes are unavoidable but as long as it gets cleaned up when it should get cleaned up than that should be acceptable. I am a general contractor that does concrete, remodel, build new structures and i am atomate about cleaning up regulary and completly upon completion and minimizing it during the coarse of construction because i know customers like it that way and it also can be a matter of having a safer jobsite any ques e-mail to nlikeflynn63@yahoo.com

I suggest that you try building for a month and then call me about it. If they picked up everything that has been cut off, sanded off, pulled off and all that stuff, your job would not get done. Any builder worth his salt will clean the place up before he even asks to get paid.

Because they can get away with it. If you want clean up specify that in your contract and don't pay the last payment until it's as clean as you want it!!
