I'm a native Floridian--tenth-generation Cracker--and I have the twang in my voice to prove it. It's also the Southernmost state in the continental US, and my father's relatives are all proud to be Southern. So why would someone say something like, as I got today, "Florida is the southernmost Yankee state?"

Because sooo many people from the northern US have moved to Florida. Not the panhandle, but into southern Florida, at a point somewhere in the area of Orlando or Tampa, and continuing southward, the number of northern transplants starts to become obvious.

Not exactly sure. Probably for the same reason that Texas (my Home state) is not a southern state regardless of its southern position. Texas ,Florida, & California seem to be states with their own identity regardless of their geographic location. I think it may possibly be a good thing not to be so closely associated with the states who rank at the bottom of the academic list for schools & education. Not deying your southern heritage but who wants to be associated with the least of anything.

It has such a tropical feel to it, although I consider Florida apart of the south.
