I don't think it's cheesy at all!! There's no point for you to choose a book which is never going to be read. And it saves the hassle of taking it to the post office to be weighed and posted. I think most shops have gift cards now which are the same as vouchers but the person can keep topping them up. Buy the vouchers/giftcard from a shop that sells a wide selection of books, your friend will be sure to find something. You could also buy a bookmark (although that may be a bit cheesy!!) to send with the vouchers.

I think book vouchers are a fantastic idea.
You can buy two types of book voucher: most bookshops sell their own tokens which you can use in any branch or you can also buy book tokens which you can use in any bookshop (not online though). Do you know where they usually buy their books? Don't buy vouchers from a chain if they don't have a local branch.
I'm also a bookworm and people don't usually buy me books because they assume I have it already, but I especially love receiving books from close friends when the book is something they have read and loved.

Vouchers, especially book vouchers sound like a fantastic idea in your case; it shows that you've put thought into the gift and at the same time your friend has the freedom to pick the actual gift that he/she will end up with. They're not old-fashioned; on the contrary, they will allow your friend to have more flexibility with this gift. Go for it !

Since you are sending it in the mail, I think the voucher is a great idea, because instead of spending extra on the postage, you could put more into the voucher. I was thinking that including a cute bookmark would be a good idea, too, just to add some personality. Maybe include confetti in the card too?? It makes it a little more fun to add some personality to a birthday card sent in the mail :)

A bookshop gift voucher would be a good idea if that's what she's interested in. At the end of the day though, it's the thought that counts.

As a guy who is a bookworm, I can tell you that this is the best idea you could come up with. Just put more into the relationship so you will have different ideas next time. He is more than a "bookworm" and if he is really a friend, you do have other ideas somewhere. Letting me pick my own book is crucial to all bookworms. What we read is as personal to us as sex, so it is hard to just "buy" a book for someone. Maybe next time, you can be aware enough to know exactly which book your friend wants.

Best present ever for a bookworm! If he lives in London I would choose Waterstones: he can use them on line or browse the wonderful six storey Waterstones in Piccadilly's to his heart's desire...
I wish I had thoughtful friends as you...;)
PS An Amazon Gift Voucher is wonderful, too. In case he might want an iPod instead for audio books! LOL

A gift card is a great gift, especially for a book worm. I love amazon gift certificates, since I can buy most anything including books and CDs. Bookworms eat through books, so I suggest a hard cover.

I don't think it's a cheesy gift at all, but it wouldn't be the only thing I got for him though, rather it's a surprise dinner, or a massage from you. something else that shows him you really want to please him and put some thought into it. I'd say pick a book for him, too, but since you said you can't find one, I'd do something like that. Maybe you can ask what his favorite author is and find some people on the net who like the same author and ask them what are some similar authors who they like as well, Then, you may luck out on getting a book he will like and you won't have to worry about him maybe having the same one because it's from his favorite. good luck!!

I'm a bit of a bookworm, and book vouchers are ALL I ask for for birthdays and Christmas. I spend a fortune on books, so it makes me feel less guilty to be spending vouchers. It also means I don't have to fill a cupboard full of unwanted scented candles, pot pourri and socks that people would get me otherwise!
