The gothic subculture came out of the punk rock movement. They were more emotional than punks, so they diverged and made their own artistic/musical/social movement. The term gothic didn't come into common usage till a decade after the movement started. Everyone has their own theory on why they're called goths. Most probably it had to do with their relation to the Romantic movement, their affinity for all things ancient, and their outsider status.

As for what they believe, a website said it best:
Being goth has nothing to do with what clothes you wear or music you listen to, it is a way of thinking and seeing the world. The clothes that goths wear and the music that goths listen to is just a reflection of that mindset. Goths see that there is extreme pain and evil in the world, along with the good. Instead of condemning it or ignoring it, goths accept these things as a part of life and try and enjoy the good along with the bad, since they can't stop the bad from happening. They are not obsessed with death, they just accept it as an inevitability. They do not try and cause more pain in their (or anybody else's) lives, since there is plenty to start with. Goths tend to be kind, intelligent, non-violent, emotional, and artistic.

I'm not too sure how to answer your question. I've bee "Goth" since JR high school, I'm 32 now. Guess it started from being a little depressed and identifying with the darker side of things. Loved vampires and the supernatural (still do) loved the Goth music, dressed all in black, black lipstick, black hair etc. I think it was mostly about the music, the cloths, and the supernatural interest. Now that I'm older, I'm happy in life and don' like being depressed any more :) I still have the black hair , black cloths, love the supernatural. Guess I enjoy being a little eccentric.

I think Goths evolved from the darker side of punk rock of the 70's mixed in with the beatnik subculture of the 50's

Are you talking about the Goths who destroyed the Roman Empire and conquered most of Europe, or the ones who run around looking dark and tragic? There is a difference, you know.

If you can't be bothered to put together a decent question - I can't be bothered to answer it.
