There should be a button on your TV's remote control to change the screen mode.

Movies are made in all kinds of aspect ratios. Cinema screens are not fixed sizes - have you ever noticed how they have moving bits at the side to change aspect ratio? They usually show commercials, then it changes ratio to show trailers, then it may change again for the actual movie.
The movie may be shot in one aspect ratio, but changed for the DVD release.

Your TV should have an 'auto' mode where it will automatically detect what aspect ratio the movie you're watching is in and make the picture fit the screen. In many cases this will mean stretching the picture, but if the TV is 16:9 and the movie is 16:9 then it should fit properly.

Play around with changing the aspect ratio on your TV and stick with whatever you're happiest with.

There are lots of different aspect ratios not just 4:3 and 16:9 and so some widescreen DVDs are even wider than an widescreen TV -- hope that makes sense

It depends what widescreen ratio the dvd is in. Unfortunately most recent widescreen movies are shot in a ratio wider than the standard widescreen TV. It is annoying. Even some movie theatres have letterboxing.

I think you have to go to options on your DVD menu and sort the screen out there.
