My mother-in-law repeatedly when to look and there was no one there. But he kept insisting there was.
Any explanation? They're both reasonably sane. Past tense for him.

No, just that there was "someone there". The window is next to the front door, so I assume he thought it was a visitor.

If we'd known he was going to die that day, we'd have asked a hell of a lot more questions than just assuming he was mistaken!

Yama the lord of death or his messengers come to take the life.
Many people happen to see them in their death bed but others cannot see them. I remember my mother once she went to see a man in his death bed. she cam back and said he will pass away on the same day as his sight id already fixed on death waiting at the door.he did pass away. You may not believe but dogs can see death and when ever death hovers nearby the howl in very sad voice.
Conversely when a dog gives such a howl of fear there is sure to be death in some nearby house.
There is also a legend of an Englishman who saw a strange lift man and because he did not like his face he got out of the lift .
the lift went up without him and crashed killing all occupants but the strange man was not in the lift.

I bekieve that at times angels come down to let some of us know that it is okay to let go. My ex had cancer and had a very painful death. He had said that a couple of times he had sen the gates of heaven and then got woken up. So it wa like the people around him stopped him from going. I do not fear death. I have a daughter who died before me.

Because you couldn't see this person doesn't mean that they weren't there. Your father in law was between two worlds, and was able to see someone from the next.

It is not unknown for somebody who is about to pass to the other side to be visited on occasions by relatives who have already passed over. These people are normally the people who come to collect them and take them on their journey.

Curious . . . did he ever say whom he thawt it might be? If not, it will be more difficult to 'figure out' some reasonable explanation.
