I am a 23 year teamster who recently lost his job because the company went out of busness. I went to northram and grumman and they said if I had a top secret clearance they could use me to either drive the tractor and trailers or the buses for them. They would not put me through the process.I was wondering how this process is done and if there is a way to get this type of clearance on your own for employment purposes. If so then what are the qualifications you would need to obtain a top secret security clearance. Thank you Sincerely Mike.

You need a sponsor, either a company or government agency. You can't get one on your own without a sponsor.
In your case Northrup Grumman is telling you that they will only hire someone who already has a clearance. This is because at the present time a Department of Defense (DOD) Top Secret Clearance takes more than a year to get.
A lot defense companies are only hiring people who already have clearances because of the delays in getting new clearances.

Mike the only way I know of to get a top secret security clearance is for the government to issue you one. I know the FBI investigates your background but I do not know the requirements that need to be met. You may have to join the military and haul nuclear materials to get one. I would recommend you contact your local FBI office with this question.

Security these days is a pretty sticky issue. So it just comes to reason they are awarded as a as needed basis. This i believe started with the walker spy case. In any case what you can do is keep your life clean and your finances even cleaner it will help with any inquiries they may have about you.

I would contact their HR department for sources on who to use. They will do a complete background, criminal, credit check, they will talk to people where you have been employed, and to your neighbors, friends and the like. It's not a cheap venture.
