The Democrats are certain of a 2008 presidential victory. They also know that the Bush economy has been as successful as it is because it is a wartime economy. As history shows, following a wartime economy, even for short conflicts such as Gulf War 1, the economy tanks.
Do the Democrats want us out of Iraq now so the economy hits bottom now with Bush still in office, so the 2008 president (who the Dems are certain will be one of theirs) doesn't get saddled with it?
Is the real issue the economy (and who gets stuck with it) and not the war itself?

Avery, although loathe to argue point by point I can't let your "facts" go uncorrected.
No one on Wall Street is saying recession, there are fears of stagnation.
You must be in the North East, the housing bubble in the south and south west is still growing, it hasn't peaked yet. Real estate investors are in Texas and south Georgia.
One reason taxes haven't gone up during this war is that consumer spending still keeps growing. If people keep buying the tax dollars keep rolling in.

Hey folks, no need for hate (Dick V). I asked an apolitical question, I'm not playing partisan politics here; besides I'm not a Republican.

I think that's part of it. The other part is that the Dems feel they must play to the "peace at any cost" section of their base. They've bought into the false power of the Daily Kos/Michael Moore machine. Even the smarter ones who know that thinking will result in a loss of the Moderate vote (and ultimately elections) are caught in a Catch 22.

I think it maybe to early to consider the state of the economy in conjunction with the outcome of the Iraq War and the 2008 presidential election. It's true that history may repeat itself, on the other hand it may not. In the mean time we still have troops in Iraq dying everyday with insurgent attacks showing no indications of tapering off. Politically the war hasn't improved the economy enough to warrant the lack of progress that has been made since president Bush announced the mission was accomplished so long ago. Everyone should have realized this wasn't going to easy or popular with the nation, no matter what side of the political fence you stand on. Politics shouldn't have anything to do with finalizing plans to allow Iraq to begin to govern itself. Whoever can come up with a foul proof plan to accomplish that, will likely win the 2008 election. Whether they be Republican or Democrat.

Well, first of all this is not that successful of an economy. Wages have been declining and not rising in the Bush presidency. Family income is down. The rate of job creation has been very weak. Second, the argument about war creating a good economy is outdated. Yes, war stimulated the economy in the second world war and the Korean war. That has not happened since than. The war in Vietnam caused inflation rather than economic stimulation. The first gulf war occurred during a recession. The wars in Kosovo and Afghanistan had minimal economic impact and I have just shown that this economy has not been very good. Why do you think that the economy has done well under Bush?

Dear Jesi:
The GOP needs to continue the mission in Iraq. The Democrats have no leadership and are walking in lock step with the GOP on Iraq. When Condi becomes president, the US hegemony will expand like a water balloon throughout the Middle East until it rests on China's, India's, Pakistan's and Russia's borders. One of those four countries may pop that balloon then.

Democrats just want their power back so they can do the same thing they accuse the republican party of. they want to make money and get rich. they could care less about the war and about the people in it, dont believe me? look at how they treat veterans. for the most part it is conservative republicans that advocate funds and other assistance to VA programs where as the liberal democrats oppose them. they off course are all about helping "poor" folks when they need them. but once they have what they want they drop them like bad habits.

A new Republican theory based on no fact or knowledge of economics. How exciting and inciteful! [misspelling intended]
Fact: The economy is already tanking; they are saying the "r" word on Wall Street and the housing bubble burst two months ago.
Fact: This is not the traditional wartime economy where civilian resources are devoted to production of armament and consumer goods are limited in production. No guns or butter choice has been made, we've just borrowed from the Chinese instead!
Fact: Taxes have been raised during every war in American history except for the Iraq war. This is the main if not the only reason why we are saddled with potentially catastrophic debt.
I agree the real issue should be the economy -- the ruined economy left by irresponsible Republican deficit spending.

I don't know how this economy or the state of the union can be deemed successful when the bottom line is that the economy sucks right now - while Bush in IN office. Gas is ludicrous, housing has skyrocketed and the lack of healthcare is a total disaster. Kids are being educated "stupid" because funding has been slashed, people are lacadaisical about the government and consider it hopeless because every freaking extra dime that could help to solve other issues goes to the war in Iraq. How much lower can this economy go???
Bush raised his leg and pissed on the world when he started this war...what a legacy.
Oh - and where in the world is Osama Bin Laden?

Do make a google search about following topics:
"Iraq War Topping $5.8 Billion A Month"
United Press International - November 18, 2004
"US account for 48 % of world military spendings"
