They each pay £10 and leave the shop, it turns out the TV should have been £25, the sales assistant decides to pull a fast one and gives them £1 each back and keeps £2, this means they have each paid £9, 3 x 9 is £27 plus the £2 he has kept adds upto £29, what has happned to the £1???

The £2 should be deducted from the £27 so that the shop owner gets £25, the assistant keeps £2 and the old ladies get £3 totalling the £30.

They have each paid £9, or £27 in total. From this £27; £25 goes to the store to pay for the TV, and £2 goes in the assistants pocket. It makes no sense to add the £2 to the £27.

The real question is why didn't the assitant just keep the £5?

Ultimately, the old ladies paid (10-1)x3 = £27 and NOT £25 for the TV because the £2 pounds has been stolen by the sales assistant.

the tv was bought for £30 which is actually of £25
so the ladies have to get back £5

the sales assistant takes the £5 and distributes it as
£1 for each lady making that £3 and £2 he keeps to himself...
OR

they each paid £9 making that £9*3=£27

then the original price of the TV is only £25

and so £27-£25=£2 which the sales persons keeps to himself...

what's the confusion in it??? there's no problem of the £1....

as far as I see there is no missing £1.
When the sales assistant takes out the £5 from the till, there is now £25 left in the till,if the assistant gives £3 back and keeps £2 the maths would be £25 + £3 + £2 which is the £30,not the way you first calculated it.

They have paid £9 each. £9x3=£27
£25 for the TV + £2 for the assistant.=£27.
There is no missing £1

It doesnt work like that. They each payed £10, and now have £1. meaning £3 taken away. The shop assistant keeps £2. £30-(£3+£2)=£25. There you go! Any way they didnt pay £9 each, They paid £10, and got £1 back!!!!

£25 for the tv and he took £2 so its adds up to £27 and not £30.

Because they have each paid £9 so in effect they have paid £27 for a £25 TV but only should have paid £8.333333333333 (recurring) each, therefore the owner has recouped £0.3333333333 (recurring) for each one, basically making up the £1 difference
