Johnny Cash serves as a microcosm to the arrogance of the Nashville "country pop" scene. Johnny Cash (along with a lot of other classic country artists) were being ignored by Nashville record executives all through the 90s and into the 00s. Guys like Cash put country music on the map, but the young folks who controled Nashville's music scene ignored them all. When Cash died, it brought on a revival that, I hate to say it, was powered by guilt and shame. People started going back and listening to his more recent stuff, and realized it was pretty good, but Nashville didn't give him a sufficient chance because he wasn't young and attractive. Now, everybody wants to plug Cash's career, in an attempt to make up for their prior arrogance. Don't get me wrong, I like a lot of Johnny Cash's music, I grew up on it, but Nashville decided to make Cash cool again after he died because they neglected him before.

Cash did ALOT of songs back in the day that are pretty embarrassing now. But some of his stuff held up amazingly. And I think his cover of U2's 'One' and some of his other recent stuff is his best work.
I don't think any other country guy from his day could have pulled it off. Musically yes. But today image, that 'hipster appeal' counts for alot. And his image filled some kind of niche that made him viable commercially.
I saw the movie on a plane.....Boring.

Well, for your information, Mr. Cash has had more influence on not only country music, but rock music as well. He was not only a country singer, but he was also a famed and accomplished songwriter. Do you know that very few singers actually write their own songs? Writing the song is way more complex than singing one.
One person whom Mr. Cash had great influence on was Bob Dylan. Of course, Bob Dylan went on to influence many other greats. So, Johnny Cash isn't just another ordinary country singer. He was a mover and a shaker, and his music still lives on to inspire others.

Jonn Cash is cool as hell! He's older than most current "country" singers, which isn't even country anymore biy more like soft-rock. Anyway, Jonny has covered hip rock tunes in his style and they are awesome. He's covered Nirvana, Pearl Jam, etc....very cool dude. That and he is the original man in black.

I thought he was dead...
He is kind of cool
Don't like country music. But if I had to listen to it, he'd be the man.

He was around in the country music business for many years! He sang and wrote many songs.
I grew up hearing his music when I was a child and now my kids love him, since he did a Pearl Jam song, just before his death.
Watch the movie, RING OF FIRE maybe you will understand him better.

I don't see any! Some of my relatives like his music, but they don't play any country music while I'm present, for I hate it, rap and gospel.
