RAM stands for Random Access Memory. Its what your computer uses to store all kinds of information such as device drivers and files being used by software you are running. This info can be quickly accessed far more easily than accessing it directly from your hard drive, so generally speaking the more RAM you have, the faster your computer will be. The info is stored temporarily while needed, and deleted when it is not or when your computer is shut down. If your system runs out of available RAM, it will move on to Virtual Memory, but thats another story.

In simple terms, RAM is just a memory location where ur computer stores intermediate data. The importance of RAM is its high read/write speed.Ur computer has 2 types of ram:Main ram and virtual ram or page-file.
main ram is the original ram installed on ur motherboard.Ur computer uses it for processing of each and every bit of data. But once , the main ram lacks free memory ,the computer can't process more data and should eventually get crashed. So , the virtual ram is an alternative for main ram.Ur computer sometimes uses a portion of ur hard-disk for processing data.In that case, it is called 'virtual ram' or 'pagefile.'
But pagefile are much slower and are rarely used by the computer. It only keeps ur computer alive but as a tortoise. So, what's important is ur main ram.
