It used to be death until 1975.250 million cows wander the streets and villages of India freely.India has old-age homes for cows, where they are housed, fed, and cared for on the government dole. The hindus believe that inside each cow live 330 million Gods
and Goddesses. They say that if you kill a cow, you will be punished after death by falling down 86 transmigrations, and
start at the bottom again as the devil.
Actually, the devil in our mythology has hoofs and horns because
of the ancient hindis(Aryan Nomads). All gods to them were cows,
and the devil was an evil cow. Later, Europeans made the devil more human, but even now we draw him with cloven hoofs and horns. And the good Gods were cows too. Baal, the calf, was what the isrealites were worshiping when Moses got pissed.
Baal's birthday was celebrated on Dec.25, as the Jews thought
the Sun was Baal incarnate, and celebrated the solstice accordingly. The religion was known as Mithraic.

The reason cows are sacred is this....
around 300 BC, the Indian subcontinent
was overpopulated by people, most of who were farmers. They needed Oxen and other cloven animals to power the plows.
In 300 BC. the Indian subcontinent already had 100 million people, and they completely consumed the open grazing areas. The little land land was only available for farming. each farm needed
two oxen and a cow to breed replacement
oxen and give milk. For mere survival,
they established the sanction on cow killing, and embedded it into their laws.
The Jews did something similar with the kosher proscriptions on cloven animals.
They couldn't eat them because they needed them to power the plow and give milk.

No, you people are totally mad!! Is this a Brit question? In the United States there should be no such thing as "illegal possession of a gun"; even in D.C. they recently ruled that mere possession of a firearm is not a crime. How many of you who answered "yes" own firearms and shoot frequently? I would guess none. I've noticed something interesting over the years, when I take folks who have never really fired a weapon to the range and let them play with my various weapons (pistols, semi-autos, precision shooting rifles, military rifles, etc.) They go away with a different take on it. They realize that many folks have grown up from childhood shooting, and it is a very important part of our lives. I started shooting when I was about seven, and was a crack shot by twelve. I was an expert shot in the military, and became even better after I got out of the service. Guns don't kill, people kill, and murder is already a crime. I would say that when you ban guns, what will you do next, ban knives and swords, but that has already been done in the U.K., right? It isn't hard to understand: criminals don't obey laws, only the law abiding. You are only screwing it up for those who would enjoy firearms, the criminals don't care what laws or sentences you pass. You know that violent crime has only increased since the restrictions in the U.K. and Australia started, right? And that here in the states the most violent cities are the ones with gun control (D.C., Chicago)? It is not a coincidence.

Yes, I was told that cows are sacred in India back in high school, but never really understood why. Here, in the USA, we use cows for sustenance; makes me wonder if the people of India look down upon us for this reason...
