I think people years ago did this. I know for a fact my great, great grandparents did. They owned a farm in the early 1900s, and they had 15 kids. They all went to school until about grade 7, then they quit and worked the farm. The boys helped the dad farm the land, and the girls helped the mom with the inside work (cooking, cleaning, sewing, etc.). I think this was fairly common back then, but not so much today.
I'm sure there are probably some parents who want to have kids for this reason, but my guess is that most of them start out with good intentions to raise happy, healthy, well-adjusted kids, but when the kids get old enough, it becomes verrrry easy to say, "Hey Billy, could you go to the fridge and get mommy a Coke?" and that eventually leads up to more responsibility (cleaning, etc.).

My sister only had her 4 kids so she could get state aide and food stamps, she had them cleaning her house and other house work that she should have been doing. If they didn't do it the way she wanted it done they would be beaten. I hated her so much and felt so sorry for the the girls she had, I had even offered to take in a couple of them to help them out and let them be kids. The State did take her kids away but would always give them back. One of the girls at the age of 15 refused to go back home to her, she stayed in a foster home until she was 16 and then she filed papers to be claimed as an adult which the court granted. The other girls stayed with my sister and lived in the hell, one became pregnant at 15 and then again at 17.
I asked my sister why she had kids to just be her slaves, she was pissed at that question but it was the truth, she said well you have kids and you make them work. Yes I do have kids and their work was called chores and they also recieved an allowance each week, their chores were mostly like helping me out with keeping up the house or help cooking but we did it all together. I now have 1 child left at home, the other 2 are on their own with their own families. So I keep up my own house and my hubby helps, all my teen has to do is wash dishes, makes it easy on her since we have a dish washer. But as for my sister, i refuse to ever go over to her house, the local landfill smells cleaner then her place.
I don't believe that everyone has kids just to have a free slave, but there is nothing wrong with assigning your kids small chores to learn responsiablity.

It was only a hundred years ago that many families felt blessed to have 10 or more kids because they could all help out on the farm. And having a lot of kids guaranteed that you would have a place to go in your old age because children respected and took care of their parents when they were old. In some cultures parents are still very revered and respected by their children and grandchildren. and taken care of in their old age. America probably has more old age homes then any other country because children don't want to assume the responsibility for the care of their elders.

Find me some parents that have their kids trained so well that they'll drop, run and fetch on command! There's no single answer why couples have kids. Sometimes you wonder why after the kids are turn 10.
I like my kids just fine. For fetching the remote, slippers and a beer from the fridge, guess we'll stick to the dog and love the kids for what they are- a never ending source of entertainment.

Don't be silly....do you have ANY idea how much WORK is involved in raising a child up to the point where they're even able to do SIMPLE chores, like setting the table or feeding the cat?
If all parents wanted was someone to help out with chores, there's housecleaning services for that (and they'd cost a lot less than feeding and clothing a kid, too...)

Obviously, you are not raising any kids and never have. ARE YOU KIDDING???- "Do some couples have kids just to have someone DO THINGS for them?"-- ARE YOU SERIOUS??- So, let me see if I understand correctly-- you want to know if, after the pain of giving birth, getting VERY LITTLE sleep for for at least the first several months, dealing with the tantrums of a potty-training two year old, paying more money than you thought possible for diapers, food for the kid, and school clothes and supplies, spending year after year helping the kid get up and off to school, ON TIME, after being fed, dressed, etc, then getting the kid in bed on time EVERY SCHOOL NIGHT for years- regardless of your plans-then dealing with the kid once he/she is older and needs you to spend even MORE money for clothes, school supplies, all the while never once being told you are appreciated-- you mean you want to know if a couple would go through ALL OF THAT just to have... WHAT? What could a kid possibly "do for them" that would make two sane adults say to themselves, "GEE! 15 years from now- after spending countless sleepless nights and dollars, I'd like to have a KID who could... perhaps ..run an errand now and then, do some cleaning, etc, so let's go ahead and have a kid for all of the countless things they can 'do' for us."-- YEH RIGHT.

My kids have to be bribed to do anything, unless it is something they want to do. I think if someone has kids just to get free labour, they need to wake up and smell the coffe, cos it ain't never gonna happen. It would be cheaper and less hassle to get a maid (and the maid won't answer you back!)
And for your next point, if and when my kids move out, I will be able to afford a maid......

It is alot of work to keep a house. The parents are doing the kids a favor. Making them help and do thier share will give them good habits for when they are on thier own.

The maid being cheaper point is a good one, but people stupid enough to have kids for labor probably aren't smart enough to realize the financial comittment they're taking on.

u must be a kid. come on think. a maid would be alot cheaper. they have to feed and clothed the child for yrs before they do anything. but the parent does have to show the child how to live and do things on their own so when they do leave they know things...
