I open doors for people, let older people on buses first, get up on trains/buses if there are no seats left for older people or people with children...
I usually only ever get dirty looks and no thank you...
I'm 19, and a girl...i make an effort be polite to older people, and i seem to get no respect or anything in return! A thank you costs nothing!
Does any one else get this?

Oh yes, but keep in mind. You were raised to be respectful to elders, and that is getting more and more rare in todays society. Just keep in mind that when you do that, your parents look good. Don't worry about what other people say and do, you can pat a hole in your back that you did what was right. Kudos to you.

Good for you, you are obviously a polite well mannered young person.

The problem lies with the other person not you, and to answer your question I believe that young people do have manners and respect, unfortunately they can be a little too selective when they choose to use those qualities. Secondly I sometimes get the same response as you from the elderly and I am 44 years old. Don't worry it is not an exclusive thing to you.

Keep up the good work, it will get noticed even if you don't think it does.

Well done.

I have no idea why people have a problem with younger people being nice. I've had better manners then people twice my age since I was eleven years old. My friends used to stare at me when I held a door open for someone or helped an older person get on or off a bus.

I'm the same age as you, and I was always taught to be respectful to others even if they wouldn't show you the same common courtesy. Some people are going to take your kindness for granted (too bad for them). But if you truly know that you're doing the right thing by being polite, that should be enough to justify your happiness. You know that you're making an effort to be nice to people...you know that you're showing good citizenship...you know that you're being respectful. Even if someone else won't acknowledge it, acknowledge it yourself. And just because someone doesn't acknowledge your kindness doesn't mean you should stop it. There are those who think highly of people like you.

On behalf of those who haven't said thank you, I want to say thank you for being kind to others. You won't believe how many young people like us set bad examples...

Nah pet it's not you it's them. They expect you to be rude so they prejudge you.... My gran does it all the time. People are just generally rude and defensive.
I'm 32 and I get it a lot as well. I look at it as long as you know you've been polite than that's all that matters.I don't wish to tar everyone with the same brush but the further south you get the more ruder they get.

You're so right! People are very rude. The other night we were kept awake by a guy who parked his car outside our house with his cd player on full blast. Singing loudly to the music for hours. To Country and Western! So how old was he????
There's no age barrier to bad manners. It's how you were brought up, I think. So your parents did you proud. Well done.

Are the thank you's ,inwhich you miss, exspected in your acts. Most acts towards respect are done out of good habits in behavior. It's nice to reciece a thank you, but not exspected. You should have a feeling of gratification that fills your needs.

your true politeness will be tested when you can still be polite while others are rude to you. It's hard, but it feels better afterwards, for having clear conscience. Sometimes the crowd is just plain wrong. Cheer up girl.
