watershed is a natural hydrological unit in which all the natural drainages flows into it.Its dimension varies from few hundred sq.mile to thousands of sq.miles.For example, the Mississippi river system makes a watershed which includes major rivers of eastern and north eastern rivers, which are also forms a watersheds. Each country depending upon the existing natural drainage network demarcate the the watersheds of different dimensions and codify them for their scientific use. USGS is the leading federal organization which deals with the subject of watersheds delineation. The topographical maps are normally used for the purpose of delineating the watersheds. The house in which we live is also a part of some watershed.

Any area where the drainage water all goes to the same place. That could be up here in the mountains, where things haven't changed that much in historical times. We mostly try to keep our houses from falling into the river during the rainy season. It could also be in mid-county, where the primary changes are for housing and shopping malls, and watershed is mostly about how to avoid getting flooded in bad winters. Or it could be in the south county farmlands, where the watershed is considerably changed by the leveling and terracing done by the farmers. There, the watershed area can be the subject of much controversy, especially between the conventional farmers and the organic farmers, who do not want their watershed contaminated with artificial chemicals.

Mountains hills, plateaus, lakes (natural and man made), rivers, creeks, streams. Streets can also work as a watershed, flowing into sewers. A watershed is basically an area that all drains to the same place.
