Steal means to take something not yours.
Rob means to take something AWAY from somebody.

If someone goes into your house and takes your money when you are not home they are STEALING.
If they come up to you on the street and make you give them your money they are ROBBING you.

They are very close and can often be used interchangeably. However, "steal" carries the connotation of secrecy. Someone broke into your house and stole your jewelry. "Rob" implies force or the threat of force. You were robbed of your wallet at gunpoint.

If someone steals something from you they could have done it behind your back with no force or violence involved. If they have robbed you this usually means that they have used force or violence.

In legal terms, i can make you understand about both words.

"To Steal" is related to two persons, means where two persons involve in sneaking work.

"To Rob" is related to more than two persons, where more than two persons make loot.
